President Lee Myung-bak pledged Monday (May 12) that he will abide by the teaching of Buddha not to oppose people's wishes.

"I will always closely follow and serve the people's wishes as taught by Buddha," Lee said in a speech read by Culture Minister Yu In-chon at Jogyesa (temple) in downtown Seoul on the occasion of the 2,552nd anniversary of Buddha's birth.

"I am determined to sweat and struggle together with the people so we can revive the sagging economy and help our country make a new leap," said Lee.

"Buddha's teaching of overcoming differences to achieve harmony should be the spirit that we who live in the present should bear in mind to achieve grand harmony and coexistence."
